Programs
LARA programs reflect guidelines set forth by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and help adult learners improve academic and life skills for successful entry or retention in the workforce. The programs include:
| PROGRAM |
EMPLOYMENT and TRAINING PURPOSE |
| Academic and Work Skills Development |
Learners improve academic, computer, and life skills that are related to general employment needs. They prepare for the GED and other exams that help them become competitive in the job market. |
| Transitions to Postsecondary Education |
Learners develop high-level math and language skills in college-ready classes that help them prepare for the rigors of post-secondary coursework or occupational certification. |
| English as a Second Language |
Non-native speakers improve English language skills for acclamation within the community, self reliance, and job success. |
| Family Literacy |
Adults improve academic skills and encourage reading at home while young children develop physical motor, language, and social skills in LARA’s childcare program. |
| Corrections Education |
Public offenders prepare for self-sufficiency by developing academics, work skills, and appropriate behavior that help them enter or re-enter the workforce. |
| Special Needs |
Special needs learners improve basic academic and daily living skills for successful employment in sheltered workshops or at other appropriate jobs. |
SERVICES OFFERED
Instruction
Indiana certified teachers offer individualized and small group instruction in open learning labs for clients developing academic and workforce skills. Learning labs are conducted daily and are offered during morning, afternoon, and evening hours. College-ready classes are conducted as whole-group instruction and develop high-level reading and language skills within a college format. LARA also provides English as a Second language instruction at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
Counseling
The program counselor provides individual guidance and group discussions to help learners with personal or family issues. She orients new learners entering the program and helps teens develop good attitudes and work habits. The counselor also acts as a liaison/advocate for learners within agency, court, and/or workforce settings.
The college-ready counselor provides career counseling and helps postsecondary candidates navigate systems for financial aid and college admission. She also helps students reduce barriers to college success.
Childcare
Childcare, for children ages two and older, is provided for learners attending class during morning and evening hours. Young children engage in age-appropriate activities, and school-age children receive help with homework. Parents are also able to access child intervention programs – Childcare Resource Network and Our Kids Our Community – that co-locate at Washington School.
Job Search/Job Readiness
The WorkOne Express Site provides job search, resume writing, career exploration, interviewing, computer skills, work-skills development, and other services for LARA learners and the general public.

LARA provides official GED testing each week to the general public for a fee of $50, with an optional re-take fee of $10. The program offers daily "Offical Pre GED" tests for a fee of $10.
