Volunteer Tutors
Volunteer tutors provide a vital link between LARA and the community. They assist staff members in open learning labs, college-ready and childcare programs, English as a First Language classes, and in the WorkOne Express Site. One-on-one or in small groups, volunteers help create a warm and caring environment conducive to learning. Personalized instruction/attention provided by such volunteers greatly enhances the learning situation for children and adults. Learners know that volunteers care enough to donate time and effort to help them learn. In return, volunteers receive satisfaction as they help adults become educationally independent and help children improve social, language, and physical motor skills.
Volunteer Tutor Training Program
Volunteer training is a shared responsibility between staff members and the Tutor Trainer. The training program is:
- Relevant to needs of the volunteer
- conducted at a level that complements the volunteers’ backgrounds and experiences
- on-going, with direct and immediate assistance given when needed
Training is both formal and informal. The Tutor Trainer provides two formal training sessions before tutoring begins, and staff members give on-going instruction and guidance when volunteers assist in their classes or areas of service.
Over the years the volunteer program has utilized the talents of many outstanding individuals, including homemakers, postsecondary students, experienced personnel, and retired professionals.
Each year, more than 1,700 enrolled students, 770 children, and 1,600 WorkOne clients interact with community volunteers. Contributions from volunteers are significant. Simply put, the volunteer program is indispensable in helping LARA meet the needs of hundreds of adults seeking diverse educational and employment objectives.
